Study Skills Success Certificate Program

Want to take your time management and study skills to the next level? The Study Skills Success Certificate Program will help you explore various study skills strategies including time management, test preparation and making effective lecture notes. Completion of 4 workshops leads to certificate completion.

  • You must attend 4 stamp-eligible study skills seminars designated as "SS certificate eligible".
  • When completed, please submit your card to the Academic Advising & Career Centre, room AC213.
  • Once your attendance has been confirmed, you will receive a signed certificate and your name will also be entered into a draw for an enticing prize. The deadline to complete the program is Friday, April 2nd, 2012.

Academic Integrity Matters (AIM) to Meet University Expectations

The workshop encourages collaborative learning and represents a holistic approach academic Integrity.

We will talk about learning communities and introduce you to academic expectations in a University setting, talk about intellectual property, writing skills, time management and motivation strategies and provide more information on the academic code. Join us for a hands-on workshop which has been put together by a collaboration of facilitators from a number of UTSC departments . You will be glad that you attended.

Choosing Your Program

Are you trying to choose your program(s) of study or thinking about changing your program(s)? Have you been wondering about the career opportunities associated with various programs at UTSC? If so, this workshop is for you. You will learn more about: the programs available at UTSC, appropriate program combinations, limited vs. unlimited programs, the 12-distinct credit rule, and much more. This workshop is also designed to help you to identify your interests and determine how they relate to UTSC programs. Additionally, you will be able to examine the relationship between these programs and career opportunities.

Communicating with Your Professors: An Interactice Approach

Have questions for your Professors?  Not sure how to approach them?  Come and experience different interactive scenarios and learn the skills to enable you to speak with your Professors.  These interactions may include:  email etiquette, mentorship questions, course-related or personal situations.  You will have the opportunity to practice in a mock-setting.

Exam Preparation and Exam Writing - How to Ace Your Finals

Need help acing your finals? This workshop will help you to develop techniques to improve your performance in multiple choice questions and essay exams. It will also cover techniques in learning to manage exam stress and anxiety.

Extreme Time Management and Procrastination: Take charge of your time!

Learn how to be in control of “Your time”.  Using practical exercises, this workshop will teach you how to put together a daily schedule that works for you.  Participants will learn how to plan for busy periods in the academic year and adapt their schedules.  This session will look at why you procrastinate and what you need to change so that you don’t sabotage your schedule.  Realistic goal-setting will be discussed. (SS certificate eligible)

Get Motivated! Strategies for discipline and study habits

Does school sometimes feel like an insurmountable mountain that is difficult to climb. You know you have to do the work, but you cannot get motivated to do it? Attend this workshop and we will give you some study strategies to help you move forward. Improve study habits and discipline. Tap into your resilency. We will give you some tips on motivation and resiliency strategies that you can implement right away.

 

How Do You Learn?

This workshop will help you to examine how you learn. It will assist you in discovering your preferred "learning style" which is how you tend to take in, organize, and make sense of information. Different learning styles adapt better some study techniques than others. The session will assist you in identifying study strategies that best suit your learning style. This should allow you to have more productive study time and hopefully better grades as well!

Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)

Do you want to learn about the 10 effective study skills of highly effective university students? The LASSI is designed to assess your use of study strategies and your attitudes toward learning. If you want to refine your study skills and improve your GPA, this interactive workshop is for you. You can complete the LASSI assessment on-line prior to the workshop (see instructions on the intranet when you sign-up). During the workshop, you will create a tailor made study plan that can improve your academic performance.

Mastering Multiple Choice Tests and Exams

Do you get nervous thinking about the upcoming multiple-choice-exam? Attend this workshop and learn about how MCQ tests questions are constructed and improve your exam performance. It will also cover techniques in managing exam anxiety.

Memory & Concentration

You spend a lot of time on your lecture notes and readings but find that you cannot remember effectively? Having trouble staying focused on your studying? If yes, come to this workshop to enhance both your concentration and memory. Specific strategies and memory techniques will be discussed to assist you in developing the skills you need to make improvements in these areas. (SS certificate eligible).

Midterm Preparation: Multiple-Choice & Essay Type Exams

This session will teach participants how to tailor a study strategy to reflect their learning style and how to execute it effectively.  This will be accomplished through the completion of several practical exercises and group discussion.  Several test formats will be discussed including, Multiple Choice and Essay (SS certificate eligible).

Reading and Note-Taking

Strong reading and note-taking skills are central to successful knowledge retention and exam preparation. This study skills seminar will help students become more efficient and effective readers and note-takers. Active reading strategies will be discussed, and some common reading myths about reading rates and comprehension will be debunked. Renowned note-taking systems will also be discussed to help streamline your study efforts. (SS certificate eligible)

Reducing Academic Stress

Are you feeling stressed and anxious about school? Are you having trouble juggling your school work? Here is a chance for you to take steps toward managing your academic stress. In this workshop you will learn to:

  • Techniquest to reduce academic stress
  • Organize and prioritize your school work
  • Use the potpourri of time management principle
  • Review of academic resources

 

Silencing Your Inner Critic

Do you feel like your own worst saboteur? Frustrated that you can't seem to accomplish your academic and personal goals? Using concepts from personal coaching and positive psychology, this small and interactive workshop will define the role of the inner critic, illustrate how to transform your self-talk, and provide numerous strategies to ensure your personal and academic success.

This all-encompassing study skills seminar rests on the premise that longer hours do not necessarily mean better grades. The key is efficient studying. Crucial study skills are addressed and practical suggestions offered to improve your study time planning, lecture notes, memory and concentration skills, and reading comprehension.
