LINGUISTICS, PSYCHOLINGUISTICS

The scientific study of language, Linguistics examines how language is constructed and the mechanics of speech and language formation, and also why and how language varies in human beings. Psycholinguistics examines the relationship between language and the human psyche.

The program encompasses the following main components:

  • Speech sounds - phonetics and phonology
  • Words - morphology
  • Sentences - syntax
  • Meaning - semantics
  • Texts or Conversations - discourse

The Specialist Program in Psycholinguistics and the Major Program in Linguistics are designed to help prepare students for entry into professional programs in areas with a significant language component, such as speech-language pathology, education and language teaching. U of T Scarborough has a long history of sending students on to postgraduate programs in speech therapy and speech pathology.
